This is National Poison Prevention Week—and an important part of poison prevention can be found in a toll free phone call to Poison Help, a free service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that’s available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Poison Help—1-800-222-1222—automatically forwards you to a poison control center in your area, where you can talk with an expert in poison emergencies.

Call Poison Help, for example, if you took a medicine incorrectly, used a strong cleaning product without gloves, ate food that was left out too long, or were bitten by a spider.

Also call if you think your child swallowed a poison such as a cosmetic or personal care product, a cleaning substance, or a part of a plant.

Don’t wait for signs of poisoning, the experts warn—they’ll help with any possible poisoning, even if you aren’t sure it’s occurred. They say that often your problem can be solved on the phone. (If a victim isn’t breathing, call 911 first.) The poison expert also might call back to check on you.

If you need a doctor or ambulance, the poison expert will tell you right away, and he or she may also call your local hospital to give treatment information ahead of your arrival.

Poison Help recommends that you keep its number near your phone (call the number to receive free magnets), or enter the number into speed dial. It also offers tips at its website on preventing poisoning, and how to help in a poisoning emergency.

Entry bubble How Are You Saving Money These Days?

Has your credit card been seeing less daylight lately? According to a new study on how Americans are handling their money in the current economic downturn, 37 percent of people surveyed said they're cutting down on how often they use their credit cards. They're either going to a cash or debit card basis or are just plain spending less.blog wallet The same survey says that 57 percent of respondents are being more careful about dining out and 46 percent are shopping more at discount superstores.

Some people I know are even going back to the old fashioned, pre-credit card era practice of envelope budgeting. It's low-tech wonderful. After working out their weekly and monthly budgets to find out exactly what their expenses are (and finding "leaks" in their budget—expenses that they weren't really aware were adding up) they take out cash and divvy it up into envelopes for each expense—insurance, rent or mortgage, food, utilities, etc. And when that money's gone at the end of the month, it's gone. No borrowing from another envelope and going into debt.

There are so many other ways you can save by auditing your lifestyle:

  • What are your phone habits? Are there cheaper plans that meet your calling needs better?
  • When you go grocery shopping, are you making a list before you go, sticking to it and shopping on a full stomach or do all the displays and smells get you to fill your cart with things you hadn't planned to buy?
  • Once you've paid off your car, are you setting aside some money every month to help pay for your next vehicle so your car loan will be smaller? If you're shopping for a car right now, are you armed with the info you need to get the best deal?

I could write a 10,000 word blog entry on all the ways to save. But my bosses nudge me nicely when I go over Gov Gab's 300ish word limit. And I'm over it now. We don't have any limits on blog comments though. So please help me out and share what you're doing differently these days to save more and spend less.

It finally happened to me, I got "phished" or "vished" -- whichever you prefer. I never thought it would happen to me since I've been giving the public information about protecting themselves from phishing and ID theft for years. It sure is different to be the one faced with fending off the crook, though.

So, here's my story: 

A couple weeks ago I was driving home from our office picnic when my personal cell phone rang. I usually don't answer if it's an unknown number, but for some reason I fishing polepicked up anyway. A woman with a syrupy southern accent started the conversation by saying she was from the State Department, she then told me I was using a cell phone number the government was paying for and nicely asked me to provide all the information about myself I possibly could that might help her "resolve this issue."

My first instinct was to help the woman out.  My heart had started beating like crazy as I wondered what I had fouled up this time.  I just wanted this situation resolved ASAP.  I mean, who wants the State Department on their case?  Then, my red flags started going up.  Why would the State Department call me directly instead of calling the cell phone company to ask about the bill? And, if  the State Department really wanted information about me, couldn't they get it another way, like send me a certified letter on government stationary? Besides, I pay the bill for that phone number every month, how could they be paying it, too? Whew, I finally had my wits about me and I hadn't given up any of my personally identifiable information (she already had my name and cell number).

With that brief moment of panic behind me, I kindly and firmly replied that unless she could prove what she was saying I had every reason to believe she was just trying to steal my identity, and, NO, I would not be sharing any personal information to help her out.  Then the threats started -- "I'm going to have the State Department's head of security call you" "and my director, too."  My favorites were "you're stealing from the government and committing a crime" and "we're going to have your cell phone turned off." I told her to feel free to have them contact me since I wouldn't be sharing any information with the head of security or her director either unless they could prove what was going on.  Exasperated, I excused myself from the conversation and hung up.

What did I learn from all this?

  1. It's harder to resist the phisher than I thought, and it's also scary to consider "what if they're telling the truth"?  I still wonder about this one, but, I haven't gotten a call from the State Department's head of security and no one has shown up at my door yet.  I'm comfortable this one was a hoax.
  2. Phishers don't just email, they can also call.  It's harder to fend off a caller than just deleting an email.  When in doubt just hang up.
  3. Be tough and if what the caller says sounds fishy or just doesn't make sense, it probably isn't legitimate. DO NOT answer any questions -- even if the caller threatens you!!
  4. Don't be afraid to ask for proof of the caller's identity.  If the caller's claim is legitimate they won't hesitate to prove themselves to you.
  5. Report email phishing to the US-CERTReport phone phishing to the National Fraud Information Center.
Thank goodness I didn't fall for it!
