Entry bubble Your Turn: Are Your Kids Ready 4 School?

By: Editor | August 17, 2009 | Category: Home and Family

Child with backpackOur Monday blogger, Jake, has work duties that will take him away from Gov Gab until September. In his absence, we’re alternating between “Your Turn” weeks, where we’ll ask a question to spotlight your knowledge about government resources, and posts from guest bloggers across the government.

Today's Question:  Are your kids ready for school?

The start of the new school year requires a lot of work for parents:  school supply and clothes shopping, filling out paperwork, arranging childcare, calming anxious children, and changing routines to allow for earlier bedtimes.  Believe it or not, there are a lot of government resources to help you and your children make the transition easier.  And, please share your tips below - we parents need all the help we can to get the school year off to a great start!

I would add that students need to make sure their summer reading and math packets are completed, and to not wait for the last minute. My daughter is struggling a bit with hers. :)

Sabrina,
Good luck to you and your children! I hope your year is great.

Amy,
I know just what you mean - we're struggling with a math packet, too. The reading has been easier because my kids were able to choose books they liked. I think the only writing my three children have done this summer were their thank-you notes and one letter to a favorite teacher. Oh, and don't even get me started on how much my middle child's cello has been practiced!

Milhealth79,
Thank you for the reminder about immunizations and for the helpful link.

Our elementary school offers school supply packages for a set fee (cost varies by grade/supply list). This year the set was mailed to my home and it included everything on my school's supply list for that grade. I was impressed that it included brand name items. It was so simple and saved me from running around from store to store. The only downside is my kids don't get to choose their items (favorite color folder, etc). As a compromise, I allowed them to pick one item from the store (less than $2 each). Also, the kit included printed name/grade labels for my kids to put on each item in their supply kit.

My son picked out his school back pack this afternoon. I hope this one lasts the whole year.
