Entry bubble Your Special Day

By: Nancy | October 16, 2008 | Category: Fun

Being the Thursday blogger is the best! Not only do I get to share Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day with you in the coming months (and I KNOW you'll be reading Gov Gab on those days, right?) but I get to hang out with you today, on my birthday.

birthday girl and her candlesAs I'm writing, I'm devouring a piece of birthday pie baked by our apple pie expert, Arlene, the manager of Kids.gov. I wish I could send you a slice, but the crust keeps getting stuck in our fax machine. So in lieu of that, how about I share some birthday-related sites that I found today?

Is someone special in your life getting ready to celebrate a BIG birthday? If they're 80 or better, the White House can send them a birthday greeting. Greetings can also be sent for births, weddings and 50th+ anniversaries. You can also get birthday greetings from past presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter. Be sure to request presidential greetings at least six weeks ahead of the big day.

Know a birthday person, veteran or patriot who'd appreciate a flag that was flown over the US Capitol? You can order one from your Senator or Member of Congress and you can specify which date you'd like the flag flown.

About three months before each birthday, you're mailed your Social Security Benefits Statement calculating the amount of money you've earned over the years and estimating the amount of Social Security benefits you and your family may receive. When you can collect your benefits depends on when you were born. The Social Security Administration's full retirement age calculator can help you figure it out. As of today, I am exactly 26 years from full retirement age. I'm not sure if that sounds alarmingly close or too far away right now. Either way, I'd better console myself with another little slice of pie.

Every day, the Library of Congress features a significant event that happened each date in history. Wonder what else happened on your birthdate over the years? Wander over to Wikipedia and search your birthdate. I'm sharing my birthday with dictionary creator Noah Webster, playwright Oscar Wilde and musician John Mayer. On this date, Desmond Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, John Paul II was elected pope in 1978, and both the Walt Disney Company (1923) and the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) got their start. What a busy date!

Take a peek and let me know: what happened and who was born on your birthdate?

First of all, thank you for the great post and links. I did not know that I could have a birthday greetings sent from the White House. I believe that my grandparents will be getting one next year.

By the way, Happy Birthday Nancy! I hope that over the next 365 days each day will be better then the day before. God bless.

Thomas

Nancy: we can send a man to the moon, but we can't figure out how to fax a slice of apple pie? Oh well, maybe someday! Meanwhile, Happy Birthday; I continue to check in with govgab daily and always find something of interest.

Neat post.. I knew about the birthday cards thing because my family has an unusual holiday greeting from President Nixon regarding the Fourth of July..

The flag thing, though.. I like that.. *Very vaguely* rings a bell but sure likely never would have remembered it to repeat it..

Thanks for the post..

Happy Birthday..!

Peace and best wishes from North Georgia.. :)

Thank you for the great birthday wishes! I can't tell you how much it means to hear from each of you. Thanks for keeping all of us Gov Gabbers encouraged!

And Wisp, if you're reading this, you've got me curious...what was that Richard Nixon 4th of July greeting about???

What kind of pie was it? You can't fax a pie, but surely you can post the recipe....

I was so busy yesterday i didn't get to read my favorite blog! so Sorry, Nancy. Happy belated birthday. I hope it was wonderful! Let the retirement countdown begin! Form me i have 27 years until i am eligible under FERS, as if Social Security will be around then.

As for the pie, there is overnight mail. I'll just get a piece from the office canteen, and hope nobody notices when I sing you happy birthday. Think they might send me to EAP? Maybe i need a mental health day?

LOL!!!

This pie would cure the need for mental health days. It's the kind that's so good, you have to eat it with your eyes closed.

Arlene used three kinds of apples, none of which I can remember right now. Not Granny Smith, which is the only kind I've ever been brave enough to try to bake with. Oh, and she does something magical involving pouring butter and sugar over the lattice crust.

I'm going to see if I can get her to share her pie recipe with us here. Peek back on this thread on Monday or Tuesday to see if I can get her to post it. If not, well, I'm gonna be eating some humble pie then. ;)

Hi everyone,

Shout out to the apple pie fans! Hey party people!

The recipe I use is from allrecipes.com "Apple Pie by Grandma Ople."

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Apple-Pie-by-Grandma-Ople/Detail.aspx

I went to the farmers market (aren't you proud of me Joann?) to speak to the Apple Guy from El Vista Orchards in Fairfield, PA.

He gave me some great tips.

1. Never use just one type of apple in apple pie. (Who knew I'd been doing it wrong all these years?) He recommended empire, johnnie and honey crisp apples. Right now, I'm inlove with honey crisp!

2. If you need to make apple sauce, use gala apples. They puree the best.

I hope you all enjoy the pie. I must admit, I cheated and used the ready-made crust. Makes my life easier.

Happy baking!
