Entry bubble The Photo Finish

By: Nancy | September 27, 2007 | Category: Home and Family

We met yesterday to talk about how our first week of blogging’s been going. Everybody really enjoys doing it, and we’re grateful for the comments we’ve been getting on our posts.

But the one challenge that several of us ran across was finding the perfect photos to go along with our blog entries. Our office belongs to a couple online copyright-free photo services. But there’s also a resource for terrific, free photos right on one of our own websites. You can find online images from the government by using USA.gov’s search box and selecting “images.” Or you can go directly to the U.S. Government Photos, Graphics, and Multimedia page to search dozens of government online image galleries and videos.

I was amazed to find tons of contemporary and vintage pictures, maps, charts and graphs from federal, state and local government websites.

I found heroes making history...

Martin Luther King Jr

and scenes from everyday life.

Family at a picnic

Sports.

Women's football

Famous works of art...

George Washington portrait

and the not so famous.

child's drawing of a house with caption keep Kansas pretty

Images that brought back happy vacation memories...

Barnegat lighthouse

and destinations that are out of this world.

Something to keep in mind is that not everything you find on government websites is in the public domain. So be sure to check the individual websites that host the photos you’re interested in using to find out what their copyright policies are.

Take a look and share the links to the great photos you come across.

Guaranteed, you’ll find everything from soup...

to nuts.

What a cool blog! I'm especially excited to see some easy ways to find legit, free photos online. That's been a frustrating search for me. Another good resource is the "Prints and Photographs Online Catalog" from the Library of Congress: http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/catalog.html. Some images listed there do have rights restrictions, but there are tons that are free and available to the public.

I remember Pueblo commercials when I was a kid ... it's nice to see that the U.S. government has finally entered the modern age and is providing some useful resourches in a fresh way. I hope we see more innovative things coming, and not more stale rhetoric.

Are you guys open to suggestions/comments about other blog topics? Thanks for setting up this cool site!

Hi Doc!

Thanks for the encouragement. It's always nice to come across somebody else who knew the Pueblo TV ads as a kid. :)

The Library of Congress gallery you mentioned is a great one. That's where I got the picture of the lady making soup.

We would love to get ideas for future blog topics! You can email any of us by clicking our name above our posts and sending us a message.

Spread the word! The more the merrier around here.

I too remember the Pueblo ads as a child, and even sent for information in school as a class.
I think your website/blog is awesome. I bookmarked it to go back often.
Thanks

Re: " . . . .When any of the daily bloggers is out of town or . . . ."

No offense, but doesn't "when any of the daily bloggers ARE out of town"

sound better? What's the rule on this? We need a grammar g'ma to keep us in line!

Thank you, Nancy, for the the information about free pictures. I have always struggled with trying to find the right picture to use with my blog.

Great job to everyone associated with the govgab blog.

this is great stuff, I can't wait to check out these sights for photos, legal ones. I love history and I like the picture of Martin. Even the family ones and the ones drawn with crayon. This blog is going to get me in trouble with my school work, I am online and should be posting for that but instead I am here, but all is good I will make it up this weekend and just stay up longer so I can skim through these and read. Almost like taking another class on "goverment this and that" and so much useful information I have to find somewhere to store it all!!!! Loving it
