Entry bubble Looking for an Alzheimer's treatment

By: Jess | July 23, 2009 | Category: Health

Elderly Couple outsideAs people age, sometimes they become more forgetful. A name that was easy to recall no longer is or specific details from events become fuzzy. At its worst, people can develop Alzheimer's Disease.

Lots of research is being done to find a way to slow the development of Alzheimer's and while currently no method exists, a new study was recently released with some interesting findings.

The study looked at whether Omega-3 fatty acids did anything to slow the progression of the disease. Sadly the study found that people already diagnosed with Alzheimer's who took an Omega-3 supplement showed no real improvement. However the study found that taking the supplement helped those who were just starting to become forgetful.

Researchers said more work needs to be done before they make a recommendation that people should take the supplement, but it seems to be a good stepping stone.

Until a true treatment is found, you can use some of these resources to help a loved one who may be suffering:

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
Medline Plus

Thanks for the information, but could you please let us know what ways we can get these Omega 3 fatty acids? What foods contain these or if they come in supplements? Is there any info on usa.gov about regulation of these kinds of supplements or nutrition info? Thanks again!

Hey VeggieFed. I found this fact sheet about Omega-3 fatty acids on Nutrition.gov: http://nccam.nih.gov/health/omega3/introduction.htm

Feel free to check out Nutrition.gov for more info on what foods (especially fish) contain omega-3s!

Any research that provides additional insight into Alzheimer’s is critical to finding a cure. Current therapies treat the symptoms associated with it, not the disease itself. The goal of the ICARA Study is to explore if an investigational drug, called bapineuzumab, can help slow the progression of Alzheimer's. There is no charge to participate in this study and patients are monitored by a medical team, including a physician. Patients and families affected by Alzheimer’s can visit www.icarastudy.com to see if they’re eligible to enroll.

Yes Omega-3 helps a lot but as far as I know that Gingko Biloba will also help a lot. The contents of Gingo Biloba is enough to help fight Alzheimer's Disease. The good source of this products is the Forever Living Company originated in Arizona.
