Fireworks on the Fourth

By: Nicole | July 04, 2008 | Category: General

Fireworks and the FlagI have a confession to make. As a kid, I hated fireworks. I hated loud, sudden noises, even if they were accompanied by pretty colors in the night sky. I hated going to the Fourth of July celebrations with my parents, where inevitably I would end up under the picnic blanket, hiding from the scary kabooms overhead.

Apparently, I was on to something. Each year, there are more than 10,000 people treated for injuries related to fireworks, and half of them are under the age of 15. That’s not to say that you can’t enjoy fireworks on the Fourth, but use a bit of caution and follow basic safety tips. Also, know the laws in your state regarding the purchase and use of fireworks.

I am happy to say that as an adult I have come to enjoy an annual fireworks display. In fact, I was fascinated to learn just how those colorful explosions are created.

Check out USA.gov’s Fourth of July page for more information about the history and celebration of Independence Day, as well as fun related activities. I took the kids’ quiz and am chagrined to say that I didn’t score a perfect 10. Oh, well. I won’t let that bother me tomorrow as I’m soaking up the sun and enjoying the smoky smell of a good BBQ.

I say let the kids have firecrackers and sparklers, its part of our heritage. We are becoming a country of over cautious spoiled sports and wet blankets.

I couldn't agree mote, fireworks are basically explosives, but for some reason many adults treat them as toys when they let their children "play" with them unattended. some fireworks carry enough explosives to blow a hole through a wall, and some less then that but I wouldn't call neither harmless.
I live in Israel and we (as some states in the US do wisely) have rules here that state only authorized people may buy sell or operate fireworks (im not talking about small ones that you can hold in your hand at parties :) ) just a little while ago a kid from the city I live in played with fireworks and one blew up in her hands leavng her scarred for life (article in hebrew: www.theog.org ).
Indeed fireworks are fun t play and watch but I can think of many things which are fun to do and let my kid to them as I see them as dangerous, the outcome might be irreversible and the impact might be disastrous.

Just my two cents.

I don't understand why people find the need to shoot off fireworks for a week BEFORE the 4th and for several days afterwards. Out here in our rural area fireworks are legal, but disturbs the horses, dogs, cats and wildlife. These folks, who are our neighbors, show such a lack of respect for us and our animals. We haven't had any positive results from our efforts to get them to knock off the "extra" fireworks and limit their "celebrations" to the night of the 4th. I truly wish that fireworks would be outlawed for all the but big organized public displays.

True, adult supervision is a must and fireworks shouldn't be sold to underage to prevent these type of injuries!

Though, I love fireworks ;) - The colors!!!!

The 4th of July wouldn't be the "4th" without fireworks, family get togethers and good old BBQ. Caution, of course, must be used as with anything we do ..... but to eliminate them altogether is a bit drastic.

The best way to viewfireworks is when they are done by a professional ... just to sit back and enjoy the show!
