Entry bubble Fightin' Phils...and FOOD!

By: Colleen | October 02, 2007 | Category: Health

Greetings! My name is Colleen, and I am the sixth (wo)man of the Gov Gab blog team. When any of the daily bloggers is out of town or otherwise unable to blog, I sub-in and pick up the slack.

This past weekend was a big one. How about those Phillies?! National League East Champs! The final three games of the regular season meant I spent an obscene amount of time in front of a television, and in turn, spent the weekend consuming nothing but baseball food. Hot dogs, chips and dips, Tastycakes (we're a true Philly crowd)—not exactly what the doctor ordered.

Entering a new week (and the playoffs!) changes needed to be made to my all junk-food roster. Adjusting my dietary habits required a little back up. Luckily, USA.gov has a full section devoted to health and nutrition. Here you can find information on everything from health insurance to tests on your knowledge of food nutrition labels.

I followed the links to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services site where I was able to make my own personal profile to see how far off track my Phillies loyalty had led me. I was able to calculate my body mass index (BMI) and find out if I risk health problems such as: high blood pressure, heart disease, or high blood glucose.

Turns out my big weekend probably won't kill me. Everything in moderation! But I was able to get some great, healthy, easy recipes. This activity log helps me keep track of my daily exercise and set goals—maybe running a half-marathon...but hopefully I'll be watching the World Series!

By the way—any Mets fans might want to check out "Being Healthy"—it has some good tips to use in the off-season!

Speaking of food from home (I grew up about 20 miles from Philadelphia)...Colleen, the eternal question for any Philly kid is: what kind of cheese is supposed to go on a cheesesteak?

There are those in the provolone camp and those in the "process cheese food" (aka Cheez Whiz) camp.

Where do you stand on this critical issue? ;)

The screenname says it all: Go Indians!

I'll be eating my pierogies, sausage and sauerkraut while watching the guys from Cleveland whip up on the Bronx Losers.

And jumping up off the couch to yell at the screen should give me the exercise I need!

So far, this young blog is totally useless. What the U.S. public needs is a government forum that addresses all sorts of gripes rather than just a place where citizens can comment on the blog post of the day!

Ask me about how I feel about any one of dozens of political issues! I've got several opinions about each of them.

What we do NOT need is a cutesy-poo blog such as this.

Brightly lit

I am brightly lit with cfls in all six condo rooms and patio, five ceiling fans (one of which is on my patio in desert heat). I have replaced only one bulb in the forty months I've been in the condo.
Would not go back to old incandescent for anything.

Hearty New England Chow-da and Boston Baked Beans are both nutritious and delicious to consume while watching the Angels fall from grace at the hands of Big Papi and the Hometown Heroes. the floor

Yes I love the Phillies, but Mariners and the A's are my favorite, and saddly these both got defeated. I am Italian and love my cheese, how about some cheesecake with that cheesesteak, I am moving back east this summer and coming back to visit a friend in Pennsylvania and can't wait to a nice cheesy cheesesteak. I saw in ad in the paper of some places in downtown philly. And who I will root for is a toss up, whoever wins I suppose..
