Entry bubble Cash for Appliances

By: Jake | September 14, 2009 | Category: Money

Fridge in KitchenThe Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 program has ended, but later this year a similar program for appliances will begin. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funded a $300 million program that will offer rebates to buyers of energy-efficient appliances and other products that carry the Energy Star label.

Consumers can expect between $50 and $200 in rebates towards the purchase of refrigerators, dishwashers, furnaces, air conditioners and other appliances. You won't have to trade in your old appliance like people did with their automobiles. Of course there are some states with separate programs that pick up old appliances and give the owner $25-$50 for it.

Each state will write its own rules for the rebate program and the Department of Energy will start reviewing rules in October. Money from the programs could start flowing to the public in November. Again this will be handled on a state by state basis, so check with your state energy office for details.

What do you think of the cash for appliances program?

This is a great idea, and I hope communities are planning on ways to keep all these discarded clunker appliances out of the landfill.

Wow what a concept, we should be able to recycle everything down to toasters to tv's,even toys then we would have less in the landfills.

So even though our national debt is increasing exponentially, I'll still be shelling out more of the money I paid in taxes for others to go buy a new refrigerator? *sigh*
I'm all for moving to energy efficient appliances, but I don't think enough people are thinking about where the money for all these rebates is coming from - their own pockets.
I do appreciate the information - thanks.

It does stop and make me think about how much I continue to pay in taxes to provide rebates for others. Considering the amount of money the government shelled out for Cash for Clunkers ($3 billion), the $300 million set aside for the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 doesn't seem like it will be nearly enough. But with any luck, people will actually take this opportunity to educate themselves and make the decision to go green. Green appliances are one way for each person to make little reductions in their carbon footprint, and eventually they will pay for themselves in saved energy and health care bills. Furthermore, the demand for green appliances and desperate need for new green technology will hopefully force steady growth in US jobs. Let's just hope companies don't outsource their these jobs and invest in the Europeans, who are already beginning to implement the technology overseas.

i'd much rather my tax money go to improving the health of the country and our future, rather than destruction and illegal wars. i'm hoping to upgrade my dryer (and/or fridge) once the program starts!

This is an interesting idea. It definitely seems to further lay the groundwork in America for a long term, energy efficient nation. However, I wonder about the fact that they don't collect your old appliances. Hopefully, many people won't see this as an opportunity to just continue using both appliances, thereby upping the energy usage instead of lowering it. As a blogger on office lamps, I could see a lot of people just being more wasteful thanks to this.
